Brink takes place in a far ahead future on a floating city which is known as The Ark. The ark was built as an experimental, self-sustaining home for 5,000 inhabitants, extremely severe overcrowding took place as a result of increasing rise in levels of the world's oceans rose up and devastating civilian life. A tiny percentage of the top few elite enjoy a comfortable lifestyle while the majority are forced to reside in filthy slums where food, shelter and water is barely minimal. These conditions for the majority leads to the creation of a resistance movement with the sole aim of seizing power from The Ark's security forces.
It's a good setting, each mission concludes and starts with a narrative thread, the plot is delivered in brief bookending cinematic scenes and optional audio logs that don't do enough to flesh it out or tie everything together in a satisfying way. The gameplay is strong enough to carry you to its conclusion, rather than having to rely on visual scenes and audio logs which don't seem to tie the missions together very well.
Make friends
Brink is set across eight objective-based maps, which can be played with a choice of either the Resistance or Security forces. Players work in conjuction with computer controlled characters or players online to make sure the specified tasks are completed as each mission is sectioned into two or more timed objectives, which are also supported by secondary minor ones.
Each mission is connected to the last by a narration, the plot is delivered in brief bookending cinematic scenes.
Teams are made up of four classes - soldiers, whose primary aim is to plant explosives, engineers, required for the repair of structures and defuse explosives, medical staff, to revive others, operatives hack devices - however teamwork is essential for the completion of objectives. Selflessness in the form of provision to the team effort is more highly rewarded than actual kills made Brink is more of a group game as opposed to playing it alone.
Freaks of war
Brink artistic style is quite unique as it employs a much more wider range of colours and the array of white and blue effects gives it a much more of a feel of the futuristic.
Players are ranked more importantly for contribution to the team rather than making the most kills.
The characters are incredibly detailed too, with long arms and other exaggerated features like broad chins which is a huge difference from the usual military types, found in these kind of games and play through the different campaigns produces different attire and military paraphernalia, in addition to the abilities that can be used to differentiate the look and style of the character at the time of play.
Smart movement
Another distinguishing factor is Brink's S.M.A.R.T (smooth movement over random terrain) system.this allows you to get around the map by running, climbing and vaulting over almost anything that gets in your way. It's a stylish system that's very easy to use. A simple tap of a button essentially turns your run into whatever move the scenery requires; all you have to do is guide your character as they traverse obstacles and structures.
